Biden: “It is Russia alone that stands in the way of peace”

U.S. President Joe Biden also took his own country to task during his speech to the UN General Assembly in New York.

Biden warned of lasting global tensions if “Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine” does not end soon. Furthermore, during his address to the United Nations, he said, according to the Handelsblatt: “If we allow Ukraine to be undermined, is the sovereignty of other countries safe?” Moreover, he indicated that certain principles of the international order were sacred, such as sovereignty, territorial integrity and human rights. These should not be abandoned to satisfy an aggressor, Biden said.

“We are at a historic turning point,” he said. For Biden, Russia alone is responsible for the war, “and it is Russia alone that stands in the way of peace.” He reiterated that the U.S., as the largest donor to Ukrainian defense, would continue to stand “alongside the great people of Ukraine” and would see it as his duty “for the U.S. to lead at this moment in history.”

Scholz warns against “sham solutions

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz echoed the words of his counterpart. He warned against “sham solutions” in the Ukraine conflict and recalled the Cold War era and the fall of the Iron Curtain at a reception. In his view, the lesson of history 2is a no to violence as a means of politics and a clear yes to attempts to overcome rifts.” Scholz said that today the world would experience new trenches: “Imperialism is once again showing its ugly face.”
