Pentagon’s Report Sparks Outrage in China

Newsweek details how the Global Times branded the Pentagon’s findings as “malicious guesswork and defamation,” accusing the U.S. of sketching a skewed portrait of China. Embedded in the Pentagon’s report are six hypothetical scenarios where China might be compelled to flex its military muscles, one of which includes China’s consistent show of force in Taiwan.

U.S. Seen as Tension Catalyst by Global Times

Newsweek highlights that, according to the Global Times, it’s predominantly the U.S. actions that are heightening the strain in the Indo-Pacific zone. The Chinese publication underscores, “The actions of the U.S. military over the past year unveil the real burgeoning threat in the Asia-Pacific region.”

U.S. Allocates Billions to Counteract China’s Pacific Moves

Newsweek also mentions the U.S. Defense Department’s commitment of over $9 billion towards the Pacific Deterrence Initiative, which seeks to ensure the openness of the Indo-Pacific territory. Moreover, Admiral Harry Harris, the previous head of the Indo-Pacific Command, sounded the alarm this week about China’s potential move on Taiwan. Concurrently, Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen voiced that peace with China remains the paramount choice.
