Interruption of communication: NATO drone on Russian territory

In Latvia, the Ministry of Defense in Riga has launched an investigation to determine the causes of the loss of contact with a drone on the border between Latvia and Russia.

The goal is to determine the so far unknown technical cause of the communication breakdown with the unmanned aerial vehicle, Defense Minister Andris Spruds said on Latvian television according to the German news platform n-tv.de. The drone went missing during a military exercise over the weekend, according to the Baltic EU and NATO country’s army. There is a “high probability” that it landed on Russian territory, Latvian armed forces announced. The drone was used for surveillance and was not armed militarily.

After losing communication with the drone, Latvia acted in accordance with international norms and informed Russia about the incident, Spruds said. The usual practice in such cases is to return the drone, he said.
