ISW warns: Russia launches several offensives simultaneously

According to a report by the U.S.-based think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW), as covered by German news website n-tv.de, Russia has launched multiple offensives simultaneously in an effort to regain the initiative in Ukraine.

The ISW suggests that it is “likely” Russia is conducting several simultaneous offensive operations in eastern Ukraine. However, the think tank also notes that this may prove challenging for Kremlin forces. The Ukrainian military is reportedly making tactical progress along the front, particularly in the western area of Zaporizhzhia and the left bank of the Kherson region.

The ISW also points out a strategic dilemma for Russia: whether to maintain certain elements at sectors of the front for defensive purposes or to relocate them to support offensives in other areas. Such redeployment could end without reinforcements, potentially impacting Russia’s ability to fully regain the initiative.

This report comes in the context of Russia escalating its war of aggression against Ukraine, which intensified in February 2022.
