“Necessary measures taken”: Russian aircraft enters NATO airspace

Latvia shares a border with Russia and is closely monitoring its neighbor’s actions. According to German news website spiegel.de, Riga has accused Russia of illegally entering its airspace with an unspecified aircraft flying over the territory of the Baltic country.

Riga reported this on Tuesday evening. After the unlawful border crossing, the aircraft returned to Russian territory. In response to the airspace violation, Latvia has summoned the chargé d’affaires of the Russian Embassy. A statement said that “necessary measures have been taken to avert any threat to Latvia’s security” in response to the observed airspace violation. “Operational information” has been conveyed to NATO, without further elaboration.
