Request by Melnyk: Ukraine seeks tornado fighter jets from Germany

Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrij Melnyk praises Chancellor Scholz for German arms deliveries to his country. At the same time, however, he expresses the desire for missiles and fighter jets from the Bundeswehr, as the German news platform n-tv.de reported.

“I am glad that Chancellor Olaf Scholz himself can announce so proudly today: ‘Germany is the second largest military supporter of Ukraine after the United States.’ You can see Scholz’s satisfaction, he seems to enjoy this leading role – and I think that’s good,” Melnyk told the German newspaper Funke Mediengruppe.

It would be extremely beneficial for Kyiv if Ukrainian pilots not only had access to the Taurus guided missiles, but likewise received Tornado fighter jets from the Bundeswehr to transport these high-precision systems, Melnyk further explains. “The Tornados will be phased out over the next few years anyway and replaced by American F-35 jets. They will be scrapped and could easily be handed over to Ukraine.”
