Russia Advances Two Kilometers – But Then Comes Ukraine’s Counterstrike

Russia is making progress around the city of Avdiivka, which has been contested for months. This is reported by the British Ministry of Defence on the short messaging service X, formerly known as Twitter.

The British Ministry of Defence writes: “In recent days, Russian forces have made further small advances on the northern axis of a pincer movement in their attempt to encircle the Donbass city of Avdiivka. Since the beginning of October 2023, Russian forces have moved the frontline in this area forward by up to 2 km. Although this advance is modest, it likely represents one of the greatest Russian successes since spring 2023. It has cost the involved units thousands of casualties. As part of this operation, Russian troops are gradually approaching the coke and chemical plant of Avdiivka, where the Ukrainian forces hold one of their main defensive positions. Although Avdiivka has become a protrusion or bulge in the Ukrainian frontline, Ukraine continues to control a corridor about 7 km wide, through which it supplies the city.”
