After the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed optimism about his country’s imminent EU membership, as reported by the German news website tagesschau.de.
“We all know that it’s only a matter of time before Ukraine becomes a member of the EU,” Zelensky stated in his evening video address. He then noted regarding the visit of diplomats from the 27 EU member states, “Hence, one could say that the meeting has already taken place within the EU.” For over 19 months, Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia’s aggression and has held the status of an EU candidate for accession since the summer of 2022. President Zelensky emphasized that it is his country’s goal to start accession negotiations later this year. He assured that Ukraine would fulfill all the demands of the EU Commission.
