The EU advocates for accession negotiations with Ukraine

Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression, Ukraine has been pressing for rapid admission into the European Union. The EU has now agreed to these negotiations.

However, according to SPIEGEL, there are many conditions and measures that Ukraine must fulfill before accession. The EU sees the conditions for starting accession negotiations as largely met, according to a progress report. As soon as the government in Kyiv has met the last conditions, talks with the country are to begin.

Negotiations are subject to further conditions

Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian President, had already promised the EU further reforms in his country before the recommendation for accession negotiations. In his nightly video message, Zelensky said: “Ukraine will be in the EU.” For him and his country, accession means “economic security and social stability.” The Commission, however, demands that Ukraine intensify its fight against corruption and comply with the standards in the fight against money laundering.
