United Nations: US ambassador compares Putin to Stalin

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, has compared the war tactics of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the atrocities committed by Joseph Stalin during the Holodomor.

The Holodomor, a man-made famine 90 years ago that claimed the lives of an estimated 3.5 to 5 million Ukrainians, occurred during Joseph Stalin’s tenure as the Soviet dictator. Thomas-Greenfield stated during a session of the UN Security Council, according to n-tv.de, that Putin, like Stalin, used food as a weapon of war, and that the Holodomor “has become a cautionary tale of what happens when we allow cruelty and tyranny to go unchecked.”

Matthew Hollingworth, the Country Director of the World Food Programme for Ukraine, spoke about the food crisis to The Kyiv Independent, saying, “Ukrainians are cut off from access to markets to buy food, and farmers report that they can no longer produce enough food – a situation that has dramatic implications within and outside Ukraine.” He also mentioned that one in five Ukrainians is affected by food insecurity and that access to food is hindered in about 40% of settlements at the front.
