German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is currently visiting Ukraine. He does not come empty-handed: a new arms package for Ukraine worth 1.3 billion euros has just been approved by Germany.
At a press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Rustem Umjerow in Kyiv, Pistorius said, according to the Münchner Merkur, “This will help you fight Russian aggression.” According to the defense minister, further anti-aircraft missiles of the type Iris-T SLM will be delivered. The package is also said to include anti-tank mines and artillery shells of NATO caliber 155 millimeters.
Upon request, Pistorius said, “We are talking about 20,000 additional shells.” According to him, 140,000 shells of this caliber have already been announced for Ukraine for the coming year. However, estimates suggest that Ukraine has a daily need for more than 5,000 shells. Pistorius only promised higher deliveries for 2025.
