According to Guido Steinberg, the experienced Middle East expert at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, there is a low likelihood of the conflict escalating, as reported by the German news website tagesschau.de.
In a conversation with ARD Brennpunkt, the Islamic studies expert stated, “I don’t see that happening yet. The fighting will primarily be confined to the Gaza Strip.”
Steinberg further commented on the motives behind the attacks: “What we’re dealing with here is an attempt to disrupt the peace talks between Israel and Saudi Arabia – facilitated by the U.S.”
Two days after the onset of the comprehensive attack by the radical Islamic Hamas, clashes continue between the Israeli military and the fighters. Since the beginning of the attacks, Israel has recorded at least 700 deaths, while the number of abductions is estimated at 100. Over 400 deaths have been reported from the Gaza Strip, as the German news platform deutschlandfunk reports.
