In social media, videos have emerged showing the destruction of several Russian howitzers and the bombing of the TOS-1A Solntsepek. This is reported by the German news website merkur.de.
The Solntsepek, translated as ‘Blazing Sun’, is considered a kind of wonder weapon in Russia. However, not all Russian weapon systems touted as such have proven effective in practice. A video shows a drone targeting one of these multiple rocket launchers south of Kherson and bombing it, resulting in a massive explosion. The user ‘Special Kherson Cat’ shared the video on the blogging service X, formerly known as Twitter.
The Russian multiple rocket launcher Solntsepek is capable of firing rockets with thermobaric warheads. These work similarly to aerosol or vacuum bombs. Upon detonation, they release a highly flammable chemical, igniting the surrounding air. This results in a combination of a pressure wave and intense heat with significant destructive power. According to Russian statements, about 50 such multiple rocket launchers are in use in the Ukraine war.
