Without conscience: Putin turns convicts into soldiers

Nikolai Ogolobyak gained infamous notoriety as a Satanist and mass murderer due to his heinous crimes. Now, he is fighting for Russia in the Ukraine war, as reported by the German news website Münchner Merkur.

The 33-year-old, originating from the Yaroslavl region north of Moscow, was sentenced in 2010 to a 20-year prison term for murder and desecration of corpses. Along with underage accomplices, he committed, according to a report by the news portal Daily Beast, four murders of teenagers and desecrated their bodies in initiation rituals.

In the midst of the Ukraine war, Ogolobyak was surprisingly released from custody by the Russian government, although he was supposed to remain in prison until 2030. The recruitment of criminals from Russian prisons is a strategy used both by the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Wagner mercenary group to bolster their troops in Ukraine. The criminals are promised a pardon in exchange for military service. After six months of military service in Ukraine, Ogolobyak was able to be released.
